Underground Roots & The ILL Mansions Era

ILS started out in 1991 in West London (Shepherd’s Bush), setting up a studio inspired by D&B and the "straight out of the bedroom" movement enabled by new sampler technology. ILL Mansions studios was born, built around an Atari and an Akai S1000 sampler.

While only having a couple of minutes of sample time didn't allow for working with full singers, songs, or "proper live musicians," the setup could still match the punch of the big studios. ILS started out charging local DJs from pirate radio stations in the area, like Don FM and Flex, to make dubplates. It was through these 4-hour sessions that ILS met future collaborators, including G Force (Mark Force), Richard File (Mo Wax), Cas, Solo, Donna Dee, Dave Tipper, DJ Deekline, and MC Stevie Hyper D.

Defining the Sound: Good Lookin Records & Mo Wax

As his reputation grew, ILS was invited to work for LTJ Bukem's drum & bass label Good Lookin Records under the names ILS & SOLO or Axis. Joining GLR at its inception, he helped define the label's classic D&B sound alongside LTJ Bukem.

In 1996–97, ILS joined the iconic Mo Wax record label as an engineer and producer. He created sound design for major commercial clients like Coca-Cola, Nike, Bacardi, and Miller—even producing a 7-track Nike album distributed free with magazines across Europe (totaling one million units). His client list expanded to include high-profile names such as artists from Fleetwood Mac, The Who, Garbage, James Lavelle, UNKLE, and Wall of Sound.

Pushing Nu-Skool Breaks: Idiots Behind the Wheel & Soul Trader

Following the demise of Mo Wax, Tipper suggested ILS release an album with emerging breaks label Fuel Records. The result—1996’s Idiots Behind the Wheel—was hailed as the first proper nu-skool breaks album. Blending cinematic funk, tough beats, and atmosphere-soaked string and jazz elements, it remains an essential breaks benchmark.

Building on that momentum, ILS teamed up with Marine Parade to release his second album, Soul Trader, featuring vocals from Diane Charlemagne. The lead single, "6 Space / Next Level," was picked up for a critically acclaimed Orange TV ad. The album went on to win Breakspoll Album of the Year, sparking extensive tours across Europe, Asia, and the US.

Mainstream Success: Bohemia & Video Game Features

In 2005, ILS released his third studio album, Bohemia, on Distinctive Records. It quickly became one of the most talked-about electronic records of the year. Zane Lowe made Bohemia his "Album of the Week" on BBC Radio 1, while Pete Tong championed the lead single "Cherish." Further radio appearances on Kiss FM and XFM, alongside a set with Carl Cox, pushed the album into the spotlight.

Bohemia brought a harder, lusher dance floor edge featuring sub-bass, orchestration, and vocals from Bulgarian singers Desi and Roni (Nasekomix), MC Wonda, and Rhalia. The album gained even wider international recognition when its track "Feed the Addiction" was featured as a primary theme in the game Need For Speed: Most Wanted.

Continued Accolades & Later Releases

In 2008, ILS released Paranoid Prophets via Botchit & Scarper. Backed by tastemakers like Zane Lowe, DJ Mag, Pete Tong, and the Stanton Warriors, the record won Breakspoll Album of the Year—making ILS the only artist in the genre to win the award twice.

In 2010, ILS re-partnered with Distinctive Records for his last album 33 RPM (aka Revolutions).

“ILS is very much an artist in his own right and judging by this album an artist at the top of his game”
